"Krap-Krap"

6 January 2017

When the farm was bought in 1989 the owner wasn´t aware of the ravine with its natural fountain hidden in the mountain peaks. I saw it from a helicopter once, packed a backpack and walked kilometers up and down in every ravine looking for the waterholes and fountain. In late winder the streams don´t reach the bottom of the valley making it difficult to find the waterholes. Years later a bulldozer made a road through the ravine to the other side. The dams in the ravine was also build later on. In the early nineties we walked in the ravine with my mom and dad. It was a very dry year, the ground was still damp but there was no surface water visible. Mom Emmie sat down on the ground under a rock and began to scratch the ground with a little stick. Slowly the water began to filter through the sand. With our hands we made small river banks with the doughlike dirt and stood in amazment as the puddle filled with water. Sanuel, the farm foreman those days always referred to this site as: "Daar waar die oumiesies gekrap het." Later on it was called "Krap-Krap" - one of the special ravines at Shayamanzi with it´s beautiful rocky area and plant life. In the dry winters the ravine with its lush gras is a favourite place for wildlife not scared of mountain climbing. Here we´ve have numerous family picknicks. It is also a popular route for leopards to move to and from the valley at the bottom of the "Krap-Krap" ranive.

A former employee, Nicholas, told of his narrow escape when he came accross a female leopard with two cubs under a rock slope. She blew and pulled her ears flat. Fortunately, he kept his cool, slowly move backwards and didn´t turn around and ran away. She had saved him.

In a good rainy season there is a vibrant body of water coming down here with a strong stream of water flowing from the fountain... (Become a subscriber for more)
