Physical condition of blue wildebeest

12 February 2014

www.leopard.tv

This shows two blue wildebeest licking at a block of salt. The physical condition of the wildebeest is poor as it is the end of the dry season when the grasses of the Waterberg region are low in nutritional value. That is the time when supplemental feeding of salt and food is required. The poor physical condition is manifested in the prominent hip bones and rib cage which are typical in animals in such a condition. Generally, there are three classes of physical condition for herbivores, with those in the best physical condition having full and round hindquarters. As the physical condition deteriorates, the hindquarters and tail base take on a blocky appearance, and the hip bones, ribs and ischium start to show prominently. Herbivores that are in a poor physical condition have the appearance of being shrunken. The two blue wildebeest feed together without showing aggression.
