African darter´s webbed feet

31 October 2013

This video was taken in the late afternoon near dusk at the Eiland waterhole It shows an African darter sitting on the branch of a dead tree that is sticking out of a reed bed. The darter is sitting with its head buried in its feathers as if it is sleeping although it still lifts its head occasionally to look around. Its image is reflected in the placid surface of the waterhole. The webbed feet show why it is such an excellent swimmer. African darters often sleep close to where they forage and this may be what this darter is doing. A black crake is still actively walking over the lily pads although the flowers of the water lilies have already closed for the night.

Video interpreted by Prof J du P Bothma.
