Burchell´s zebra stripe pattern and color

5 February 2014

www.leopard.tv

This shows three Burchell’s zebras that are milling around this waterhole. The brownish shadow stripe between the black bands on a white background shows clearly and are absent in Burchell’s zebras from East Africa. The zebras also clearly show that mammals with coat markings are bilaterally asymmetrical. Tthe zebras sniff at the ground near the waterhole and seem to be using their mobile lips to pick up antelope pellets that have been scattered there. Like zebras generally, these Burchell’s zebras are in an excellent physical condition because a zebra has a food throughflow rate that is twice as fast as that of a ruminant such as a blue wildebeest. Burchell’s zebras eat around 7.8 kg of dried plant material per day, most of it being grasses lower than 350 mm in height.
