White tip of leopard´s tail

23 January 2014

This video was recorded in the late afternoon from the catwalk that spans the leopard camps in the north-eastern corner of Shayamanzi. The video shows a leopard that is sitting among tall grass clumps on a rock in a leopard camp in the late afternoon. The leopard appears to be eating while looking up and around intermittently. Later, the leopard sits on its haunches while a glossy starling sits near it on the ground, probably to scavenge food scraps. The white tip of the leopard’s tail shows clearly. It is believed that when hunting, a leopard will lift up its tail when it is in tall grass. The white tip of the tail is then twitched and arouses the curiosity of the prey, enticing it to approach. The ears of the leopard are turned backwards to listen for possible approaching danger in die video. At 17:36:00 the leopard at first moves a little distance away, but then it turns around to move deeper into the camp over a rock.
