Part 1 of 2: Zandi, sister of Zel and daughter of Zizi. Three beautiful leopards. They look alike, but each has her own character. Zizi, the caring mother, is quieter in nature but don’t mess with her or her children. Zizi would do everything to see her family happy and to keep them together. Zel, the cheerful loner, does her own thing and follows her own path.

Zandi
Zizi, on the day after release, spent the night in a nearby ravine and came back the following night for her two daughters. Zandi went with her, but Zel stayed behind. Zandi followed her mother a few kilometres behind.

Mother and daughter’s trackswere visible in the sand. Mom’s larger tracks in front and the smaller tracks that followed her through ravines, among the rocks and long grass. Any time another female leopard’s territory was traversed, they could have been attacked, hurt or even killed.
An injured mother or Zandi would not have been able to care for themselves. Hence it was a brave mother who chose these dangerous ravines on the southern end of the farm. Between the many rocks the most dangerous snakes in the world can be found, i.e. black mambas, Mozambique spitting cobras and puff adders. Caracals and jackals on the plateau above the

ravines would neither have hesitated to kill a small leopard to remove any future competition. The people from Nature Conservation tried to follow the signal in Zizi’s GPS collar soon after her release. A journalist of the New York Post accompanied them to report on the brave mother and her two daughters. At one stage they heard the growling of a leopard, probably Zizi, the mother, sending them a clear message to not come any closer. They carefully retreated and left the area.
