Zandi

Part 1 of 2: Zandi, sister of Zel and daughter of Zizi. Three beautiful leopards. They look alike, but each has her own character. Zizi, the caring mother, is quieter in nature but don’t mess with her or her children. Zizi would do everything to see her family happy and to keep them together. Zel, the cheerful loner, does her own thing and follows her own path. home on one of the neighbouring farms.
One of her paws trod a bit more sideways and therefore left a different track than those of the other three

Zandi
Zizi, on the day after release, spent the night in a nearby ravine and came back the following night for her two daughters. Zandi went with her, but Zel stayed behind. Zandi followed her mother a few kilometres behind. Mother and daughter’s tracks were visible in the sand. Mom’s larger tracks in front and the smaller tracks that followed her through ravines, among the rocks and long grass. Any time another female leopard’s territory was traversed, they could have been attacked, hurt or even killed.

sending them a clear message to not come any closer. They carefully retreated and left the area.
Something must have happened at the fence. Zizi and Zandi walked up and down and spent a lot of time at the fence. Zandi and Zel were born in a small brick room and have now been in the veld for two days. Zizi raised her cubs for four months in the small room to be strong enough for their release at Shayamanzi. Maybe Zizi and Zandi decided that she, like her sister Zel, should go off on her own, thereby reducing the risk of them suffering the
paws. Now and then Zandi caught something on the neighbouring farm or at Shayamanzi, such as peacocks or an impala. Like her sister, Zandi showed, since day one, that she will do everything to survive. For a small leopard to decide that she should part ways with her mother, couldn’t have been easy. The three ladies definitely carried a special survival gene.
The perseverance that these three leopards revealed to survive in the African bush also holds a lesson for the human species. Without perseverance and persistence the chances of success, or even of a
www.leopard.tvsame mishap. Maybe one of them could survive to continue the species. The wild environment in which they were released made their chances of survival, especially for the cubs, poor. As with Zel’s and Zizi’s story, that has species to survive, are poor.
Every time that Zandi or Zel caught something at Shayamanzi the ironic words of “Yes”, “High five” came to mind, as each catch didn’t mean damage to Shayamanzi, but a breakthrough for the threatened African leopard to survive.
An injured mother or Zandi would not have been able to care for themselves. Hence it was a brave mother who chose these dangerous ravines on the southern end of the farm. Between the been narrated earlier, we know that leopards have a survival instinct that has made them survive for thousands of years. Like her sister, Zandi went in her own direction and made herself a
many rocks the most dangerous snakes in the world can be found, i.e. black mambas, Mozambique spitting cobras and puff adders. Caracals and jackals on the plateau above the ravines would neither have hesitated to kill a small leopard to remove any future competition. The people from Nature Conservation tried to follow the signal in Zizi’s GPS collar soon after her release. A journalist of the New York Post accompanied them to report on the brave mother and her two daughters. At one stage they heard the growling of a leopard, probably Zizi, the mother, www.leopard.tvwww.leopard.tv
