Go a little crazy!

22 Aug 2014

Something is in the air...
A little love maybe? Watching these Impala go a little crazy lets you think there must be something in the air!

In the ´rutting season´ the ewes flirt for the male´s attention, while the males do mock fights to impress them and chase the other males out of the herd. These mock fights become harder and more serious untill only one male is left with the group of ewes. This single male will then mate with as many ewes as he can for the next few weeks, though not more than once per ewe.

At the same time this male also needs to defend his herd and territory against other males, leaving him little time to feed properly. Usually after 2 weeks the male that initially ´won´ the herd become weak enough to allow other competing males to push him out and gain control of the herd, thereby adding varying genes to the herd.
