Tortoise facts

10 January 2017

QUESTION:

What type of tortoise is this?

ANSWER:

  • This might be a hinged tortoise which has a hinge between marginal scutes seven and eight.
  • It is possible that it is Speke´s hinged tortoise Kinixys spekii which is active from the early morning to late in the afternoon and has a diet of vegetation and small invertebrate animals.
  • Hinged tortoises occur from the northern parts of South Africa in Limpopo and the north-eastern part of the North West province north into Africa.
  • The colour and markings of their scutes vay considerably.
  • Speke´s hinged tortoise is named after the English explorer John Hanning Speke who also discovered the source of the Nile River.
