Giraffe at the fodder and water point

19 September 2013

QUESTION:

How is it possible for giraffes to bent over this quickly and then to stand bent over while they drink water or eat?

ANSWER:

Giraffes has a special blood circulation system to avoid black-outs when it suddenly lowers its head. Therefore the blood pressure of a giraffe is around 185 mm of mercury as opposed to 95 mm in other mammals while the heart forms 2.3% of its weight as opposed to 0.5% in other mammals.
