Buck licking the ground

26 August 2014

www.leopard.tv

QUESTION:

Why is the buck licking the ground?

ANSWER:

The ground seems to contain calcrete and the bushbuck ewe may be licking at it to gain mineral elements. Such licking has not yet been recorded in the bushbuck but the closely related greater kudu and several other types of ruminant do it. However, it is known that a bushbuck will eat dung for its mineral content in what is known as coprophagy.
