Dark spot under eye of klipspringer

10 September 2014

www.leopard.tv

QUESTION:

Why do the klipspringer have a dark spot under the eye?

ANSWER:

The conspicuously large pre-orbital glands that form black spots below each eye are used to smear secretions on twigs and grass stalks to scent-mark the boundaries of the range. Scent-marking is more intense between adjacent ranges.
