Fun facts about the genet

  • The genet is an opportunistic eater that, although classified as a carnivore, will eat what is readily available. This includes small mammals and various fruits.
  • Their supple bodies can easily fit through any opening larger than their heads. The genet is able to climb trees to hunt for birds, but they spend a lot of time on the ground to hunt for prey and take shelter.
  • The genet is mostly nocturnal and adult genets are solitary animals except during courtship or when young genets are accompanied by their mothers. A female can have 2 litters a year consisting of 2 to 4 young in each. Kittens are born with closed eyes and ears and it first opens at about 10 days. They received their first solid food at around 6 weeks, but they will continue to suckled for a few weeks longer.
