Part 2 of 3: The leopard holds the secret of survival. Leopards are probably the species of the Big 5 that will survive the longest. They move on their own as individuals, at night, in kloofs, on river banks, in dense bush, on top of hills, in deserts and jungles, they run away from humans, can climb trees, eat any meat, even rotten meat if they have to, hide their prey e.g. in trees, can easily stalk and kill humans, even in their homes should they want to and have eyes six times superior to those of humans. Probably due to their survival instincts, leopards can sense from humans’ behaviour if they want to kill them and most important of all, they trust humans with the highest exception. Leopards always hide and rather avoid risks, even if they are strong enough to win the combat. They remain humble and do not let their egos get the better of them.

Fences put up by humans do not deter leopards, they climb over them or crawl underneath them, they can easily hide in holes and among rocks, are excellently camouflaged, watch humans, their biggest enemy, from high trees and mountain tops. Very exceptionally they would become or stay man’s friend, only from birth. They easily become wild again. They might trust one or two people with whom they have bonded over many years. They possess a very strong immunity system that protects them against many illnesses and infections. Wild leopards do not easily accept food from humans and mostly only eat what they have caught themselves.

Although the human eye can hardly ever see them, their eyes always see humans and over time they know exactly what to expect from humans.
